The end of the school year brings with it the opportunity to express our gratitude to our school nurses, as May is National Nurses Month!
Our district is fortunate to have a nurse in each school building. Our dedicated school nurses provide vital services and make a significant difference in students’ lives. Their caring presence is the heartbeat of our schools!
The job of a school nurse changes daily according to student need and any incidents that arise. But, in general, Erlanger-Elsmere’s nurses take care of a variety of health-related needs, as evidenced by over 20,000 health office visits each year, district-wide! Some aspects of their work include:
First aid for illness and injuries
Medication administration
Mental health referrals
Vision screenings
Dental screenings
Coordinate care with our school-based health center
Ensure compliance with state-required immunizations and physicals
Manage chronic illnesses such as diabetes or asthma
Manage students with specialized health care needs
Certify staff in CPR and First Aid
Coordinate with our district FiT and FRYSC coordinators to reduce student barriers
Beyond the practical aspects of their job, the district’s school nurses positively impact students as an extension of each child’s school support system. And everything they do is in service of their mission: ensuring every student is healthy, safe, and ready to learn.
Thank you, school nurses!
